Susan Gillespie

My art practice enables me to express the value that I place on the intricate patterns of my everyday environment and the miracles in the natural landscape. I believe that to know something, you must enter into the fabric or essence of it and my art allows me that opportunity, which I hope to share with the viewer. In my work, as in my life, I place importance on the details, calling attention to objects or connections sometimes overlooked in the rush of our lives.

This appreciation of detail and an enjoyment of exploring technique has drawn me to printmaking. I work mainly with relief printing (both wood and Lino cut) and intaglio, but often combine these with mono prints or screen prints for “hybrid prints”. The options for exploring image through printmaking are endless.

I started my art education at Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art and Design). Over 40 years later, I graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from North Island College. I also have taken workshops at Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts in many varied printmaking disciplines and in the fall of 2019 was able to take a printmaking intensive at Dedalo Centro per le Arti Contemporanee in Italy.

Participation in group shows includes: Pearl Ellis Gallery, Comox BC Raven Hall Gallery, NIC Comox Valley ‘Beyond the Archives’ show with Ground Zero Printmakers in Victoria Comox Valley Printmakers Association shows in various locals including TOSH gallery in Qualicum.
My background in forestry and horticulture, my roots in Northern BC and life on a semi-wild acreage inform my work and botanical components are often featured in my prints.
