Anne Cumming

After a few years of mucking around in everything and anything art-related, I think I’ve finally narrowed things down to painting, sculpture, printmaking, alternative photography, and writing. I’ve realized that for me they are all the same thing, as when I paint something, I want to print something on top of it, or when I print something, I want words and paint there too. And if I made a sculpture, I want to figure out how to transfer an image onto it. And always there is the internal narrative, the sense that there is a story to be told.

I guess this means I’m a multi-media artist, and if anything characterizes everything I make, it’s experimentation, failure, and mess. When I started art school at North Island College after retiring from North Island College in 2020, I realized that those three things, experimentation, failure, and mess, were part of my character, and that the sooner I embraced that reality, the faster I would be able to listen to the voices and visions inside of me instead of those around me on the outside. As a result, I don’t try to be a good artist, I just try.

I’m starting a low-residency MFA at Emily Carr in the fall of 2026, and while I will continue to paint, write, and make sculptures, my primary studio focus for the first year will be printmaking in as many of its manifestations as possible, as well as printmaking’s close cousin, alternative photography. My passionate interest is the representation of the stories inside, the ones that include the fantastical, the seemingly impossible, the laughable.
